After completing having a Bachelor of Music (Boston University, 1963) as well as observing liberal arts education as an instructor (Brown University, 1971-75), i am now strongly devoted to an approach to education that is integrated that focuses on the study of the arts in conjunction with other disciplines. There is no reason to be surprised that an ethnomusicologist who has a PhD and an MA from UCLA is keen on the arts. My ethnomusicology degree, which I started from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. It's fun to pursue multiple subjects. I also like seeing the larger view. It's great to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I am the author of three books: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods that are primarily academic pursuits and administrative duties (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean of undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and I am now the Chair of Department of Music).
